| "Echoes From the Canyon" includes several original songs written to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first exploration of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Once again, we turned to our friend, Rick Stockton, and Valley West Studio for our recording. Other than the cover, all of the photography is by Loren Boyce. Most of the songs were again recorded live, with a few overdubs of harmony. We have added a little music to this page. The songs with links have part or all of a song in Windows Media Player format. If you have a fast connection, you can simply click on the link and the song should play. If you are connecting using a phone line, you might want to right-click and download the file, then play it from you local computer. Echoes From the Canyon -- The title track is one that Kara wrote about the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. It has become one of our most requested songs. (Download is 1683 KB, entire song.) Soldier's Joy -- A traditional tune with a little twist. Part of the song is played in D minor instead of D major. When played in the minor, it is sometimes called Soldier's Sorrow. If Wishes Were Horses -- Jessica sings the lead on the upbeat song with lots of great fiddling. Shady Grove -- Lucas sings a great version of this classic song. The girls all add great harmony to round things out, with a piccolo beginning and a Swallowtail Jig ending. (Download is 330 KB, partial song.) Little Annie -- Kara sings this classic old tune about the mountains and the people that live there. (Download is 401 KB, partial song) Fisher's Hornpipe -- This is an instrumental that lets Lucas show off his mandolin playing along with the fiddle. (Download is 1190 KB, entire song.) Continuing to Dream -- Marcus wrote this one about the settling of Western Colorado. The real challenge was the fit the word "Uncompahgre" into a song. This proves that it can be done. Listen to the River -- Our good friend, Jodi Boyce, wrote this song especially for this recording. Some great banjo by Rick Stockton, and lead guitar by Lucas makes this one of our favorites. (Download is 514 KB, partial song.) So Far From Land -- Jessica not only sings and plays all the fiddles on this one, she also wrote it. What a picture she paints with the words and music! Gunnison River Rag -- Another song contributed by our friend Jodi. I can close my eyes and feel myself floating down the Gunnison River on a warm summer day...... Well, at least this makes me think of the slower parts of the Gunnison. Jodi plays the mandolin, Jessica the fiddle on this one. Listening to the Rain -- Ashleigh sings the lead (and the harmony) on this classic tune. We first learned this from the Osborn Brothers in the early 1970's. Touch of the Master's Hand -- An old poem that Laurie Lewis wrote some music for and turned it into a great bluegrass tune. Star of County Down -- A traditional Irish tune, with fiddles, flue, mandolin and guitar. Gold Rush -- Though this was written in the 1960's by Bill Monroe (with some help from Byron Berline), this tune fits right in with the traditional songs from 100 years ago. A favorite jam tune in our area. For More Information Fleeting Moment |
